Big Rig, Car Collide On Hwy. 24

A Topeka woman was lucky to escape with only minor injuries Tuesday when her car collided with a tractor-trailer rig.
The accident happened around 11:15 am on U.S. 24 highway, just west of the U.S. 75 interchange.

The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office says the semi was eastbound on Hwy. 24, attempting to make a right turn into the U.S. Foods plant parking lot when it was hit by a grey Ford Focus, driven by 50-year old Labonna K. Speakman.

The Sheriff's Office says the semi had come into the left lane in order to negotiate the right turn when the car, which was eastbound in the right lane, struck it. Speakman's vehicle ended up partially under the trailer.

Silver Lake Fire Dept. and Topeka Fire Dept. responded to the accident. Speakman had to be extricated from the car. She was taken by ambulance to Stormont Vail hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the semi was not hurt. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The accident remains under investigation.
