Drowning victim identified

Authorities have identified this weekend's drowning victim at Wyandotte County lake as Christopher Thompson.

Thompson, who drowned last Saturday in the early morning hours, was 21 years old and a Kansas City, Kan., resident.

The Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the case.

Thompson was swimming with friends at around 2 a.m. when they noticed he was missing. The Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department was called to the scene and discovered the body one hour into the search.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Circumstances leading up to the death are unknown at the time.

Here's the full statement from the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office:

On July 17, 2010, the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office responded to report of a missing person at the Wyandotte County Lake at approximately 0133 hours. Sheriff's Deputies and personnel from the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department responded and located the body of Christopher Thompson, a 21 year old resident of Kansas City, Kansas at approximately 0245 hours in the lake. Investigation into the cause of death is continuing as investigators await final autopsy results.
