Despite burn bans, due to dry and windy conditions, area firefighters responded to two grass/field fires on back-to-back days last week. One took place about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, north of Highway 36, and south of Jim Miller's Construction.
Elwood Fire Chief Alvin 'Woody' Wood advised, "Dispatch (from the Doniphan County Sheriff's Department) advised it was west of Route 238. The actual location is within the Wathena fire district, but, we continued on, and assisted in extinguishing the fire."
The second took place about 1 p.m. the following day. This location was south of Highway 36, and just to the west of Route 238. The blaze was confined to an area just to the south edge of the outer road.
