One dead after fire in west Wichita

KSN - March 15, 2017

The Wichita Fire Department has confirmed one person died in a house fire near 119th and West Kellogg. The fire started around 5:30 a.m. When crews arrived, they found fire outside of the home.

“Crews found some vegetation in front of the house on fire. As they were extinguishing that, they also noticed that there was some significant smoke coming from the attic area, the eves of the home,” said Deputy Chief Tammy Snow, Wichita Fire Department.

Firefighters entered the home and found heavy fire in the basement.

“One of the windows in the basement had given out, so fire was venting out the window,” said Snow. “We ended up backing out, using a hose line, and putting the fire out from the outside into the basement.”

After an extensive search, the victim was found unresponsive in the basement. Two pets also died.

Investigators will remain on the scene until a cause is determined.
