Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to a house fire Thursday afternoon in central Leavenworth County, a fire department official said.

The fire was reported at 2:39 p.m. at 21400 Dempsey Road. One firefighter suffered minor burns when battling the blaze.

The fire apparently began in a garage area and spread to the house. The wind helped to spread the fire.

"It just blew the fire into the house," said Rick Huhn, chief of Leavenworth Fire District No. 1.

Members of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 were called to provide mutual aid. And crews from that department were the first to arrive on the scene.

Crews from Alexendria, Fairmount, Tonganoxie and Stranger townships also responded as well as firefighters from the city of Tonganoxie.

At one point, firefighters who were battling the flames from inside the modular home were told to get out of the structure because of safety concerns, Huhn said.

He said the home's kitchen and living room areas were destroyed. Bedrooms were heavily damaged, but some items could be salvaged from these rooms.
