Dry, breezy conditions kept Shawnee County township fire departments busy Saturday putting out several grass fires.

Mission, Auburn, Shawnee Heights, Soldier and Dover fire units responded to grass, brush and stump fires throughout the morning and afternoon hours. None of the fires threatened structures, according to scanner traffic, but Shawnee Heights firefighters responded to a grass fire about 3:30 p.m. near Berryton that was about 60 feet from a house. That blaze was quickly extinguished.

A grass fire burned a couple of acres on the southeast corner of K-4 highway and S.W. Hoch Road in southwestern Shawnee County over the noon hour. Firefighters from Mission and Auburn fire departments had the blaze under control before it could cross K-4, where several houses sit close to the north side of the road. A few houses south of the blaze weren’t in danger.
