A grass fire in west Wichita is now under control.

Battalion Chief Tom Carney said crews were called to two separate grass fires at the Pawnee Prairie Park on Wednesday. Firefighters got one under control quickly. The other spread as the wind shifted which it made it difficult to fight.

"Luckily, the wind wasn't blowing as hard as it was yesterday or it would've been a lot worse than it was," said Carney.

Between Sedgwick County and Wichita, 12 units responded to the fire.

While smoke from the fire drifted into a nearby neighborhood, Carney said there were no evacuations and no homes were in immediate danger.

"If the wind would've been blowing and the embers would've been burning, it would've been a higher threat," he said.

It took crews about an hour to gain control of the second fire that burned 75 acres of land.

Firefighters don't have a cause on the fire at this time.
