At roughly 3 p.m. Wednesday Newton Fire/EMS received a call for an internal structure fire at Newton MedAssure Services, 1021 S. Spencer Rd.

MedAssure Services is a private, commercial biomedical waste disposal facility.

Deputy Chief of Newton Fire/EMS Steve Roberson, who was on scene after the event, said the fire began in the shop area of the commercial structure at some time before it was called in at roughly 3 p.m. It was called in by employees of the facility.

Newton Police were on the scene first and removed three individuals. Due to the smoke, each left the building on their own power, Roberson said.

A release from the City of Newton stated one individual at the facility was treated on scene for smoke inhalation.

Roberson said Newton Fire/EMS arrived second, entered the structure, performed a primary and secondary search, and extinguished the fire quickly.

"I think the crews did a good job," Roberson said, "and the reporting parties did a good job of trying to mitigate the incident and getting out when it got too bad."

At the time of this article, the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
