    The City of Great Bend is currently accepting applications for a Firefighter/EMT. Primary responsibilities include fire protection and EMS response/transport. Applicants will operate firefighting and ambulance equipment and participate in fire prevention programs, public education and fire inspections. Applicants will also make ambulance and rescue runs and be responsible for station maintenance and training activities. This position requires a thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment and principles of fire science, EMS, and department operations. It also requires the ability to follow written and oral instructions, read and understand technical manuals, effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, and exercise independent judgment. Successful candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and be 18 years of age or older. In addition, applicants must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license and EMT certification prior to hire. The City of Great Bend offers a competitive salary and benefit package, including health and dental insurance, 401 retirement, paid vacation and sick leave, flexible benefits plan, etc. Applications should be submitted to the Fire Department at the City of Great Bend at 1205 Williams, Great Bend, KS 67530.     Position Summary: Duties of the Firefighter/EMT include protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, as well as providing emergency medical care when needed. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the supervising officer but requires thorough individual understanding of firefighting methods and EMT duties.

    Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, the Training Officer is responsible for designing, managing and implementing the training program for Department personnel. The Training Officer will have the primary responsibility for Fire and Rescue related training. The Training Officer will be responsible for other related administrative functions for the Department. The Training Officer is considered an administrative officer and is part of the Chief’s staff.

    The Topeka Fire Department (TFD) is accepting applicants for its new paid internship. This internship is the first of its kind in TFD history.

    The internship will allow selected candidates to learn different aspects of the fire service in preparation for a potential career as a Topeka Firefighter.

    At the conclusion of the internship, qualified candidates will receive their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, which is a requirement to become a Topeka Firefighter. This internship will offer the opportunity to take the EMT class at no cost, while being paid as an intern.

    Selected candidates will work Monday through Friday and be paid for up to 30 hours per week.

    The minimum requirements for the internship are as follows:

    • Candidate must be at least 18 years of age
    • Candidate must have a High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Candidate must have a desire to help others

    This position processes medical/fire 911 emergency notifications; inquiries and determines location and nature of emergency assistance requests; determines and sends proper responses based on location, unit status, and type of incident; obtains and provides specific information for responders to allow for immediate intervention upon arrival and to protect the safety of responders and the public.

    The Fire Chief provides administrative direction and leadership for all Fire Department functions, operation, and personnel through the supervision of staff and a review of their activities. The Fire Chief is responsible for working with City Officials in recommending and developing projects, policies, procedures, and guidelines for the protection of life and property in the City, in addition to planning for the future development of the department.
